The Katie Underwood is a 149 passenger aluminum catamaran ferry vessel built for the State of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources. The vessel will service DNR personnel, University of Georgia personnel and students, tourists, and the residents of Sapelo Island. Sapelo is a barrier island that was previously owned by Mr. R. J. Reynolds, Jr. of the tobacco company and before that Mr. Coffin of the Hudson Motorcar Company.
The Katie Underwood will replace the older mono-hull ferry and will run from Sapelo Island to Meridian Georgia across Doboy Sound. She was named for Ms. Katie Underwood, the last midwife on Sapelo Island.
